New Legislative alerts have been sent out for Washington state, West Virginia, Nevada and Illinois... http://www.akc.org/news/index.cfm?article_id=3774 , http://www.akc.org/news/index.cfm?article_id=3773 , http://www.akc.org/news/index.cfm?article_id=3771 , http://www.akc.org/news/index.cfm?article_id=3772 .
Attorneys sure know how to wear you down with the shear bulk of paperwork they can manufacture! I see PeTA/HSUS activists with their signs showing dead and tortured animals, asking people on the street "do you love animals?" or "do you think this is right?", then give your money to us! What they don't tell people is that when PeTA/HSUS sees animals in distress they just walk on by! They claim that that is nature and we humans have no responsibility towards them. Just look at their actions when that herd of cattle were stranded in the snow in Colorado a few years back...they wouldn't pitch in to help drop food to them...they said well, they're going to be butchered someday anyway!
It is currently illegal to abuse animals. Our current laws would be more effective if the authorities were funded so that they could enforce the existing laws, but there has been a documented decrease in companion animal euthanization, (you can't even find a puppy at your local shelter unless a puppy mill has been raided!), the shelters are filled with pit bull type breeds because we have been successful in cracking down on dog fighting and abuse. I go to the grocery store in my area and 75% of the eggs are free-range, the meats and poultry marketed is healthier because people, when they can afford it, are consciously purchasing healthier and better treated animal products because it is the right thing to do, and we (the people) are making a difference in the way livestock is treated because of Existing Laws and the free market! We don't need new laws we cannot enforce, especially if they are driven by fanatical AR groups whose goals are the extinction of all domestic animals!
Here in California, there is even a bill being discussed to tax Veterinary care! Now in an economy such as ours where people cannot even afford to go to the doctor themselves, how will this help to make our animals' lives better? Currently on our Federal income tax forms (1040) is a box to check if you want to donate $1 to low cost spay and neuter services...Now THAT will make a difference in the welfare of American companion animals! If you haven't already filed your taxes, please check this box! It doesn't cost much, it will help a lot, and if there isn't enough support this option will not appear on future tax forms. A little help goes a long way for the future of our furry friends.
