1. AKC Troubled by Illinois Crop/Dock Bill
www.akc.org/news/index.cfm?article_id=3721
This one I have mixed feelings about but I can see the AKC's point in that there are historical precidents in regards to the health and safety of working dogs that have led to the appearance standards of certain breeds and to make it law without consideration of working dogs safety is irresponsible. On the other hand, if you own a working breed that doesn't actually do the work ???... At the dog shows, I've noticed quite a few breeds which are showing both docked/cropped dogs side by side with undocked/uncropped ones and, I am told, they are both becoming accepted. Once again, leave it to the responsible breeders and the issue will resolve itself in the best interests of the dogs. Need I say it? Butt out Uncle Sam...spoken like a true libertarian!
2. Maryland Alert: Strict Breeders Bill to be Heard February 18
www.akc.org/news/index.cfm?article_id=3723
This is another instance of overkill. We already have laws protecting animals, and when enforced they actually work! Abusive and neglectful puppy mills are being closed down slowly but surely. This bill insisting that dogs be housed in structures meeting codes more stringent than many for humans is...well...way out there! Why can't we take this well meaning energy and direct it to helping the homeless humans living in cardboard boxes under the freeway overpasses? Are animals more politically in style right now than homeless people?
